Mandagapattu Temple is a pioneering rock-cut cave temple located in Mandagapattu village, Viluppuram district, Tamil Nadu, India. Commissioned by the Pallava king Mahendravarman I (reigned 600–630 CE) in the early 7th century, it is recognized as the oldest known stone shrine dedicated to Hindu deities in Tamil Nadu and one of the earliest Hindu stone temples in southern India.

The temple is dedicated to the Hindu Trimurti—Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver), and Shiva (destroyer), a rare and significant combination in a single sanctuary. Carved directly from a granite hillock without the use of brick, timber, metal, or mortar, it exemplifies a revolutionary shift from perishable wooden structures to enduring monolithic rock architecture.
A key Sanskrit inscription in Grantha script on the temple's facade, attributed to Mahendravarman I (also known as Vichitrachitta), proudly declares the temple as Lak?itayatana ("abode of Lakshita") and emphasizes its construction as "brickless, timberless, metalless, and mortarless," underscoring the king’s innovative patronage and spiritual devotion following his conversion from Jainism to Shaivism.
Architecturally, the temple features a simple rectangular mandapa (hall) supported by four massive pillars, with three shallow shrines along the rear wall housing icons of the Trimurti. The absence of elaborate sculptures reflects its austere, structural focus, making it a foundational model for later Pallava and Dravidian temple architecture.
The site is an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected monument and lies about 20 km from Villuppuram town, near the ancient Jain settlements that reflect Mahendravarman I’s early religious inclinations.
